SPENDING A DAY IN THE BOOTS OF MORNE STEYN
An exclusive interview with the world renowned rugby star Morné Steyn.
Weekly practice routine
As the Kicker of any team you need to have a certain program that you need to follow in a week for a build up to any game on the Saturday. Unfortunately the work of the fly halve is sometimes a lonely job, why, because you will sometimes kick after a practice or even before it. You must also remember as the fly halve there will always be more, much more pressure on you, again why - You need to convert the points for the team, the extra 2 points, 3 points for the Penalty an kicking out of hand, you need to relieve pressure and also build or put pressure on the other team by clever attacking kicks.. So with all of the above here a typical week day by day:
You can call it 7 in a row, work and focus on timing and rhythm and to work through the ball and good execution with every kick
This will be the easy day. I'm only working on a few strikes in front of the poles, just working on rhythm and good balance and make sure I work through the ball with every strike. Again session is short, maybe a 15 / 20 min session.
Start the session with a few kicks out of hand, with someone kicking back. Then working on my Exits where Nr 9 pass to me and work on good solid Exits ( must have the same mindset as for a game here ). Work on my drop goals to the Poles just in the middle / in front of the poles. Then end the session with Goal Kicking from 40m out and at different places of the field working from touchline to touchline.
Off Day for me.
Work on Accuracy and tey and hit the Poles with every kick. Just help you as a kicker to focus more on one thing.
Start with a few Restarts, work on Hang time and Accuracy. Important to kick this where you as a team will kick on Saturday for the game. Then back to Poles, now important to put myself under pressure I pick 5 different spots on the field to kick from, BUT NOW here I must kick 5 out of 5, so I force myself to concentrate and make sure every kick counts.
This is the day before a game. Here I will focus on a bit of everything what I was doing the whole week. Work on a few kicks to poles from different areas on the field, a few exits, a few drops to the poles, a few attacking kicks rolling out in the 22m, and finish with a few Restarts.
Then I am ready for the game the next day.
Using a soccer ball, just using something different
and focus on the strike and timing and contact
on the ball.
